Publishing the Salary of our President

Ryan Walsh, 6/5/2003, 8:33:07 PM

When a University is crying poverty and the President and VPs of the University are
making well over $150,000 is it fair to publish there names and how much they make?

Also is it fair to publish the top five highest paid employees of the University? They happen to be 3 Deans and a 2 Professors. We obtained this information through the Universities tax form 990.

Let me know.

The choice is yours Ryan. Yes it is fair, but will that in reality change anything?

What is your President, Dean, or Professor's pay compared to other "like" schools? If I were you, I would maybe publish information of that sort. Another question you might want to address is if it is worth alienating these people from your newspaper?

You might want to consider that these people hold a large amount of responsibility, and there are reasons for their higher salaries. If you cut these salaries, it could hinder the long term viability of your university.

The last issue we also printer the results of the issue. Our EIC has been doing this for several years. We compared the amounts of the 5 highest paid individuals compared to the results from the year before. Its was probably the most talked about thing at college that week. We decided it was good to publish the saliries because many people were surprised by who got what.
And as journalist are we not supposed to shed light of things which effect our reads.

Of course it can change things! We printed the salary of Hamline's President Larry Osnes from the publicly available Federal 990 tax forms. He was pulling in about $361,000 a year from the school and we're on quite hard times.

In one issue, we ran his compensation in the headline of an article (http://www.hamline.edu/oracle/archives/022503/?news/news2.html). In the next issue, we charted the growth of his salary compared to professors' over ten years (http://www.hamline.edu/oracle/archives/030403/?news/news1.html).

Our president has now announced his retirement.

What's the best way to get your hands on the 990 forms? Through a university office or a third party?
