MINNEAPOLIS \u2013 The Associated College Press has named 43 collegiate student newspapers as finalists in its annual Pacemaker competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Pacemaker is the association\u2019s preeminent award and is often called the Pulitzer Prize of collegiate journalism,\u201d said Laura Widmer, executive director. \u201cACP is honored to recognize the best of the best.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The 43 newspapers represent 21 states and the District of Columbia, as well as Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n

In all, 150 student newspapers entered the Pacemaker competition. Two teams of three judges devoted two days to the judging and studied every entry, discussing its strengths and weaknesses.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the process was finished, the 43 Pacemaker finalists were named. From that group, 23 will earn the Pacemaker award placing those newspapers in the top 15 percent.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to demonstrating excellence in key areas including coverage, writing, editing, design and photography, the winning newspapers took risks and served as a strong voice for its student audience.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe best newspapers didn\u2019t just recap campus events, they delivered tenacious in-depth reporting and impartial and objective coverage,\u201d said Gary Lundgren, associate director. \u201cIt was a presidential election year and the top newspapers found fresh, campus angles to this national story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A video sharing insights and observations from the judges will be posted when the Pacemaker winners are announced.<\/span><\/p>\n

Newspapers competed against those publishing the same number of issues per week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the 43 Pacemaker finalists, 18 publish more than one issue per week with five finalists publishing five days per week. Another 18 newspapers published one issue per week. Seven published less than weekly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Five two-year colleges were represented among the 43 Pacemaker finalists.<\/span><\/p>\n

In this competition, only the print product was judged. A separate <\/span>ACP Online Pacemaker<\/a> competition recognized 25 finalists this spring. Several colleges and universities earned Pacemaker finalist honors for both their print and online products.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both print and online Pacemaker finalists will be recognized and the Pacemaker winners announced at the <\/span>ACP\/CMA National College Media Convention<\/a>, <\/span>Oct. 25-29 in Dallas. <\/span><\/p>\n
