Five former college editors, and now current journalism professionals and teachers, met to judge the ACP Yearbook Pacemakers in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judges discussed the “must haves” of a Yearbook Pacemaker Finalist. They determined those characteristics were engagement, complete reader service, strong design, strong photography, easy navigation throughout the spread\/section, complete campus coverage, community and pertinent state\/national coverage and storytelling captions. The judges also said creativity or “out of the box” execution would be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each judge had a chance to examine each entry. Then, they executed a first cut. After another round, a second cut was made with some discussion regarding whether a book met the criteria to remain as a finalist. After the third round of examining multiple spreads within each section and examining design, photo and copy, the finalists were selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The judges discussed each remaining book individually and voted whether the finalist would become a winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is the first time we’ve had former collegiate editors who are now teachers, magazine designers, and a communication director and owner of a brand and communication agency,” said Laura Widmer, executive director. “The judges gave each entry a long look, and then the discussion amongst them enabled them to pick the best of the best. I thought it was a great process.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winners will be announced at the ACP\/CMA National College Media Convention in Dallas, Oct. 26-29, 2017. The judges’ comments about each individual finalist and winner will be released at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
