We bet you\u2019re excited too, but there\u2019s still a lot to prepare for. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here\u2019s how you can make your weekend in Long Beach really worthwhile. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The basics <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The convention is held at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/acpmw.org\/convention-hotel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hyatt Regency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. That\u2019ll be the hub of our events, so that\u2019s where you\u2019ll find the workshops, keynote addresses, contests and critiques, Best of Show and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our hotel is right on the water, surrounded by delicious food, sights to see and iconic activities. You\u2019ll have time to explore in the evening \u2014 check out these <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/studentpress.org\/acp\/2018\/01\/22\/5-things-to-do-in-long-beach-while-youre-here-for-the-midwinter-convention\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5 things you can do nearby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What to expect<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Midwinter National College Media Convention is a gathering of some of the best students, advisers and professionals in the region. We\u2019ll have a plethora of practical learning workshops, plus an assortment of tracks that start before the convention begins, and an awards ceremony, Best of Show competition, critiques and one-on-one sessions \u2026 we\u2019re sure you\u2019ll learn a lot. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And we\u2019re excited to welcome our <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/acpmw.org\/schedule\/speakers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">keynote speakers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the convention: Christopher Goffard of the Los Angeles Times (and host of the \u201cDirty John\u201d podcast); Rachel Fradette and McKenna Ross of The State News at Michigan State University; and the team from the Los Angeles Times that claimed the Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the San Bernardino shooting (Scott Kraft, Hailey Branson-Potts, Sarah Parvini, Joe Mozingo and Marcus Yam)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>How to make the most of it<\/b><\/h3>\n<h4><b>Articulate your goals:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Try to pinpoint exactly what you want to learn and write down your goals. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/marymorrissey\/the-power-of-writing-down_b_12002348.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One study found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that people who regularly wrote down their goals were 42 percent more likely to achieve them. It certainly can\u2019t hurt.\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Talk about these goals with your team, and check in each day to see what each of you learned, how you can apply it to your organization and what questions you still have.<\/p>\n<p><b>Take notes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You\u2019re going to get a ton of information at this convention \u2014 probably more than you can remember. Improve your chances of retaining all the tips you learn by bringing a notebook and pen and simply writing them down. (Plus, this is a great place to write down your goals and review them before sessions start.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Write down how things can apply to you as you think of them. Jot down ideas and questions as they come to you. Use the notebook as inspiration throughout the school year, when you feel stressed or stuck. You might remember something brilliant you learned at the convention.<\/p>\n<h4><b>Don\u2019t be afraid to ask for help:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Conventions can be intimidating, but the entire point of them is to help newsroom thrive. Get what you need \u2014 sign up for a critique, introduce yourself to workshop speakers and take advantage of every opportunity at the convention.<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><b>Branch out:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> It\u2019s easy to stick with your close-knit group of friends from the newsroom, but we can\u2019t stress enough how important it is to spark conversations and connections with other student journalists. Chat with your peers during session breaks, or grab lunch with a new group. Vent about your frustrations, work to find solutions to common problems and pick their brains \u2014 some newsrooms do things totally differently, and another student might have the answer to the problem you\u2019ve been facing.
