Each year, the National Scholastic Press Association recognizes excellence in student media with scholastic journalism\u2019s preeminent award, the Pacemaker. Pacemakers are awarded in each category of publication \u2014 online, newspaper, yearbook, magazine and broadcast.<\/p>\n

Entries are judged by teams of professionals based on the following criteria: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership, design, photography and graphics.<\/p>\n

NSPA contacted Jasmine Abdallah, In-Depth Editor of 2015 Pacemaker recipient\u00a0The Omega<\/a> for a Q&A. The Omega is the independent student\u00a0newspaper of Downers Grove North High School in Downers Grove, Ill. The publication\u00a0won the Pacemaker in the broadsheet, eight pages or fewer category.<\/p>\n

NSPA: What were the goals going into last year and how did you ensure those goals were met?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jasmine Abdallah: We wanted to stay focused at deadlines and set as many deadlines as we could until our work was done to its full potential. We also had good discussions and debates, in class and out of class, about current events and things we felt strongly on.<\/p>\n

NSPA: Tell us about a moment you will remember most about this staff.<\/strong><\/p>\n

JA: I will remember our staff’s dedication to the newspaper. I, along with other staff members, would request time off of work to be at deadlines. We put in time and effort as we were able, and we enjoyed doing so. We are share a common interest, so it was easy to become friends with our staff members, and it was easy to talk to them about things happening in the news. That is something that not all staffs have, and I feel lucky to have found that here.<\/p>\n

NSPA: What does the Pacemaker mean to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

JA: The Pacemaker means that our hard work has paid off and it will, hopefully, continue to pay off if we keep our focus up. It means all of the late-night and early-morning deadlines have been worth it, because people enjoy what we are producing in the newspaper.<\/p>\n

NSPA: What was the toughest moment you faced last year? <\/strong><\/p>\n

JA: It was toughest, for me personally, to have to miss work and other school events to go to a deadline. In the long run, though, it has paid off because people tell us they enjoy reading the paper.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
