{"id":251901,"date":"2019-09-24T20:34:52","date_gmt":"2019-09-25T01:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studentpress.org\/nspa\/?p=251901"},"modified":"2019-09-25T19:37:23","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T00:37:23","slug":"top-scholastic-broadcast-programs-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentpress.org\/nspa\/top-scholastic-broadcast-programs-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"Top scholastic broadcast programs announced"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>NSPA names 15 broadcast news shows as Pacemaker finalists<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>MINNEAPOLIS \u2014 The nation\u2019s top scholastic broadcast news programs were recognized today by the National Scholastic Press Association, which announced the 15 finalists in its annual Pacemaker Award competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Pacemaker is the association\u2019s preeminent award,\u201d Laura Widmer, executive director, said. \u201cNSPA is honored to recognize the best of the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pacemaker finalists will be recognized and the Pacemaker winners will be announced at the <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/dc.journalismconvention.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">JEA\/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention,<\/a><\/strong> Nov. 21-24, 2019, in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NSPA Pacemaker Award has a rich tradition that started just after the organization was founded in 1921. The Pacemaker was added for broadcasting in 1996 to reflect its growing importance at the high-school level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each school entered three programs from the 2018-19 school year. A team of three judges from College Broadcasters Inc. viewed each entry and discussed its strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The winning entries stood out for not just their technical quality, but in the stories being covered,&#8221; Gary Lundgren, associate director and contest coordinator, said. &#8220;The writing, editing, hosting and the willingness to tackle relevant topics make these exceptional newscasts from start to finish.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>RELATED<\/strong><br><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/studentpress.org\/nspa\/2019-newspaper-pacemaker-finalists-announced\/\">2019 Newspaper Pacemaker finalists announced<\/a><\/strong><br><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/dc.journalismconvention.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Registration now open for fall convention<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shows were divided into live and pre-recorded categories. The frequency of the broadcast was also considered, with daily shows competing in a category and weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or less-frequently in another.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 15 Pacemaker finalists included schools representing six states. Texas led with four broadcast programs named as finalists. California and Florida each have three finalists. Overall, three of the finalists produced live broadcasts and five aired daily shows.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 15 Pacemaker finalists, eight will be named Pacemaker winners.
