On Jan. 31, you can make your voice heard alongside other First Amendment allies around the nation as part of SPLC\u2019s Hazelwood Day of Action. <\/span><\/p>\n

Not familiar with Hazelwood? It\u2019s the case of <\/span>Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier<\/span><\/a>, in which the court ruled that student journalists\u2019 First Amendment rights weren\u2019t threatened by school officials censoring articles from their publications. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a threat to a free student press, and only <\/span>13 states<\/span><\/a> have legislation that protects students from censorship. <\/span><\/p>\n

Jan. 31 marks the 30-year anniversary of Hazelwood, so the Student Press Law Center is encouraging people to fight back across the U.S. <\/span><\/p>\n

There are quite a few ways to get involved \u2014 make T-shirts or buttons, publish and editorial, host a bake sale or fundraiser to support your student journalists. SPLC can even provide guest speakers for events. <\/span><\/p>\n

And for social media? You can get involved in SPLC\u2019s coordinated Twitter blast or Instagram campaign, and they\u2019ll be going live on Facebook every hour with guest speakers to talk about the impact of Hazelwood. <\/span><\/p>\n
