{"id":602608,"date":"2020-08-17T13:10:55","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T18:10:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/studentpress.org\/nspa\/?p=602608"},"modified":"2020-08-20T15:03:19","modified_gmt":"2020-08-20T20:03:19","slug":"nspa-announces-2020-wikoff-scholarship-recipient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentpress.org\/nspa\/nspa-announces-2020-wikoff-scholarship-recipient\/","title":{"rendered":"NSPA announces 2020 Wikoff Scholarship recipient"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Veronica Roseborough, Carlmont High School, earns $1,000 for outstanding editorial leadership<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-3\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p><em>Aug. 18, 2020<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MINNEAPOLIS \u2014 <strong>Veronica Roseborough<\/strong>, of Carlmont High School, Belmont, California, has been selected as the winner of the $1,000 Wikoff Scholarship for Editorial Leadership from the <a href=\"http:\/\/studentpress.org\/nspa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Scholastic Press Association.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In spring 2020, Roseborough was editor-in-chief of the <a href=\"https:\/\/scotscoop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Scot Scoop,<\/strong><\/a> the school\u2019s online publication, and she led a staff of 130 student journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The national scholarship includes a $1,000 award given to a high school senior on the staff of an NSPA-member newspaper with a minimum 3.5 grade point on a 4.0 scale or equivalent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Justin Raisner, Scot Scoop adviser, said Roseborough excelled as a leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn that role, she makes decisions about content, she leads other students, and she is ultimately responsible for delivering a finished product that is published online,\u201d Raisner wrote in his nomination letter for Roseborough. \u201cAs a leader, she needs to manage people and personalities, she needs to motivate her peers, and she needs to communicate with adults and vendors professionally.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he nominated Roseborough in February 2020, the Scot Scoop was a finalist for NSPA\u2019s Pacemaker Awards, the association\u2019s top honor for publications. On April 15, <a href=\"http:\/\/studentpress.org\/nspa\/2020-online-pacemaker-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>the Scot Scoop won a Pacemaker Award,<\/strong><\/a> one of only 16 online scholastic newspapers to be so honored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA huge reason for that is because of Veronica\u2019s leadership,\u201d Raisner wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted her strengths as a writer and thinker, but also as an editor of the student journalists on her staff. As an example, he described how Roseborough patiently helped an enthusiastic reporter organizing a story\u2019s content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVeronica spent hours working with this writer to guide and support the creation of the final product,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing to be a great writer, but she\u2019s also a great leader and a selfless team player.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NSPA, the nation\u2019s largest association of scholastic media, provides training and recognition of achievement to high school and middle school journalists. It serves hundreds students and their advisers with two national conventions each year, including the <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/orlando.journalismconvention.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fall National High School Journalism Convention,<\/a><\/strong> Nov. 19-22.
