NSPA honors 44 high school news sites for journalistic excellence<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

MINNEAPOLIS\n\u2014 Honoring the nation\u2019s best, the National Scholastic Press Association has\nnamed 44 scholastic news sites as finalists in its prestigious Pacemaker\ncompetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While\nthe judges have named the Pacemaker finalists, the Pacemaker winners have not\nbeen selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\njudging teams will now continue to study the sites named as Pacemaker finalists\non a frequent basis,\u201d said Gary Lundgren, associate director and coordinator of\nthe Pacemaker competition. \u201cThe Pacemaker winners will be selected shortly\nbefore they are named on April 27, so for the 44 schools we are naming as\nfinalists today, the competition is really just heating up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nNSPA Pacemaker award has a rich tradition and the association started\npresenting the award to high school newspapers a few years after the\norganization was founded in 1921. Throughout the years, yearbooks, magazines,\nonline sites and broadcast programs were added to the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cThe Pacemaker is the association\u2019s preeminent\naward,\u201d said Laura Widmer, executive director. \u201cNSPA is honored to recognize\nthe best of the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\n44 Pacemaker finalists represent 13 states and Taiwan. California set the pace\nwith 13 finalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To select\nthe 44 Pacemaker finalists, judges carefully studied approximately 200 sites\nsubmitted from 34 states. The online sites competed in two different categories\nbased on school population. Two teams of three judges studied every entry,\nanalyzing its strengths. The status of each entry was agreed upon by at least\ntwo of the three judges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nthis competition, only the online news product was judged. The news sites were\neither digital companions to print newspapers and newsmagazines or online-only\nproducts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nseparate NSPA 2018 Newspaper\/Newsmagazine Pacemaker competition recognized 67\nprint news publications in November. Several schools earned Pacemaker honors\nfor both their print and online products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written\ncomments from the judges about each of the Pacemaker-winning sites will be\nposted after the winners are announced along with overall comments and\nobservations from all six judges. The professional bios of the judges will also\nbe included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pacemaker finalists will be recognized with plaques at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at the Opening Ceremony of the Spring National High School Journalism Convention<\/a> in Anaheim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pacemaker winners will be announced and will receive plaques on Saturday, April 27 at 3:30 p.m. at the convention\u2019s closing Awards Ceremony where both NSPA and JEA honors will be presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
