NSPA honors 23 literary arts and 5 specialty\/in-depth magazines<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/div>\n\n\n\n

MINNEAPOLIS\n\u2014 Honoring the nation\u2019s best, the National Scholastic Press Association has\nnamed 28 scholastic magazines as finalists in its prestigious Pacemaker\ncompetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\nPacemaker is the association\u2019s preeminent award,\u201d said Laura Widmer, executive\ndirector. \u201cNSPA is honored to recognize the best of the best.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nNSPA Pacemaker award has a rich tradition and the association started presenting\nthe award to high school newspapers a few years after the organization was\nfounded in 1921. Throughout the years, yearbooks, magazines, online sites and\nbroadcast programs were added to the competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To select the 28 finalists, a team of judges analyzed and discussed 115 entries from 31 states. From the 28 finalists, eight literary arts and three specialty \/in-depth magazines will earn Pacemaker honors. Three of the finalists were published by junior high\/middle school students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pacemaker finalists represent the top 24 percent and the Pacemaker winners represent the top 10 percent of the entries. The magazines were published during the 2017-18 school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\nreflect trends in scholastic publishing, a specialty\/in-depth category was\nadded to recognize magazines devoted to in-depth reporting on a single topic as\nwell as feature magazines. Traditional newsmagazines continue to compete in the\nNewspaper\/Newsmagazine Pacemaker competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs\nscholastic media programs shift their daily news reporting to online sites, we\nare seeing an increase in specialty magazine publishing for in-depth reporting\nand storytelling,\u201d said Gary Lundgren, associate director and coordinator of\nthe Pacemaker competition. \u201cWe expect the number of specialty\/in-depth\nmagazines to increase each year like is has in our college competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written\ncomments from the judges about each of the Pacemaker-winning magazines will be\nposted after the winners are announced along with overall comments and\nobservations from the judges. The professional bios of the judges will also be\nincluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pacemaker\nfinalists will be recognized with plaques at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 25 at\nthe Opening Ceremony of the Spring National High School Journalism Convention in Anaheim.\n\nPacemaker winners will be announced and will receive plaques on\nSaturday, April 27 at 3:30 p.m. and the convention\u2019s closing Awards Ceremony\nwhere both NSPA and JEA honors will be presented.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
