Judge’s comments: “Some damn fine videos in this batch. Alas, the category is “multimedia package” – and many entries had only video. The winner did the best job meshing text with video. Most crucial, this package was accessible either way. You could watch the video first or read the story first and still grasp the narrative.”
1. The Daily Titan, California State Univ., Fullerton, Fullerton, Calif.
2. The Spartan Daily, San Jose State Univ., San Jose, Calif.
3. Daily Forty-Niner, California State Univ., Long Beach, Long Beach, Calif.
Judge’s comments: “The Daily Titan was filled with original reported hard news. There were also interesting features and strong sports coverage. Like how the Spartan Daily mixed a captioned photo of an upcoming martial arts competition to lighten the front page and offset the otherwise serious news. Nice mix.”

10. Student Life, Pomona College, Claremont, Calif.
Judge’s comments: “Top entry: Overall excellence in attention to story selection, page design (good flow on each page), action photos, substantive coverage of topics. Insert A&E has an eye-grabber of a cover. No other section was close. Though all entries in this category (top 10) made serious attempts at substantive coverage of challenging issues.”

Judge’s comments: “Timeliness matters. Month-old material at top of website or social media is a turn-off. Quality of visuals–still/video–matters. Quality of reporting matters and is key to a successful web presence. Use social media.”
