MINNEAPOLIS — The Associated Collegiate Press has named 46 collegiate newspapers as finalists in its annual Pacemaker Awards competition.
“The Pacemaker is the association’s preeminent award,” executive director Laura Widmer said. “ACP is honored to recognize the best of the best.”
Both print and online Pacemaker finalists will be recognized and the Pacemaker winners announced at the Fall National College Media Convention, sponsored by ACP and College Media Association, Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2019, in Washington, D.C.
The 46 newspaper finalists represent 22 states. California set the pace with 12 finalists, followed by Texas with five.

In all, 160 student newspapers entered the Pacemaker competition, a decrease of five from the previous year.
Two teams of three judges devoted three days to the judging and studied every entry, discussing its strengths and weaknesses. At least two of the three judges had to agree on whether a newspaper was eliminated or would be named a finalist or winner.
Of the 46 finalists, 19 will earn the Pacemaker Award, placing those newspapers in approximately the top 12 percent of the entries.
There were nine finalists from two-year colleges with four winning Pacemaker honors.
In addition to demonstrating excellence in key areas including coverage, writing, editing, design and photography, the winning newspapers took risks and served as a strong voice for the student audience.
“The best newspapers didn’t just recap campus events, they delivered tenacious in-depth reporting and impartial and objective coverage,” said Gary Lundgren, associate director and coordinator of the Pacemaker Awards competition.
Insights and observations from the judges about the Pacemaker winning newspapers will be posted after the Pacemaker winners are announced, along with the names and professional bios of the judges. The judges have provided written summaries about each Pacemaker winner, as well as video comments about the process and the entries.
Newspapers from four-year schools competed against those publishing with the same frequency. Two-year newspapers competed against each other regardless of frequency.
Nine newspapers from two-year colleges were represented among the 46 finalists. Four Pacemakers are being awarded to two-year colleges.
In this competition, only the print product was judged. Online sites compete in a separate Pacemaker competition. The ACP Online Pacemaker finalists will be announced at the end of September.
