The Associated Collegiate Press is saddened to confirm of the death of Dan Reimold, whose College Media Matters website and blog are the nation’s go-to source for news and analysis of collegiate media.
He was 34.
“We know how much Dan loved what he did and loved being part of the college media world,†Dan’s brother Zach Reimold told ACP.
Zach said his brother suffered an accident in his Wynnewood, Pa. apartment. Details about funeral arrangements will be posted as they become available. In the meantime, Zach and his parents ask for privacy.
“Dan was incisive, inquisitive, and passionate about his students and the First Amendment. He had the rare gift of being able to compel people to laugh out loud and learn at the same time,†said Diana Mitsu Klos, ACP executive director.
Reimold founded collegemediamatters.com in August 2008; while ACP financially sponsored it, he operated with complete editorial independence.
A scholar and prolific writer, Dan received his Ph.D. in 2008 from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism & Contemporary History Institute at Ohio University.
Since 2013, Dan was assistant professor of journalism and Journalism Program Coordinator at St Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He served as adviser to The Hawk news organization.
“They won a 2014 Newspaper Pacemaker. I remember the excitement when their name was called during the awards ceremony. I’ve never heard anyone scream so loud with joy,†said Amber Billings, ACP’s Digital and Design Coordinator.
ACP extends its deepest sympathies to Dan’s family, students, colleagues, friends and everyone who is better informed about the triumphs and tribulations in college media due to his efforts.
His six-word memoir: Dream Big. Create. Learn. Teach. Repeat.
