MINNEAPOLIS — Members of your school are among the nation’s top scholastic journalists, winning awards at the Fall Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association National High School Journalism Convention in Boston last week.

The National Scholastic Journalism Convention presented 70 Pacemaker awards, the highest honor given in the scholastic press industry. NSPA also presented 233 Individual awards and 154 Best in Show awards during the convention, which hosted more than 5,500 high school journalism students and advisers from across the country.

The Pacemaker, which NSPA launched in 1927, is judged and awarded based on coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics.

The Pacemaker categories presented in Boston were Newspaper and Broadcast. For Best of Show, only news organizations, publications and broadcast teams with students in attendance at the convention were eligible to enter the contest. Awards were given in 17 categories.

The Individual awards honor work done by individual students. These include design, writing, photography, broadcast and cartooning.

In total, there were 350 submissions for Pacemakers, 2,938 for Individual awards and 494 submissions for the Best of Show contests.

For years, JEA and NSPA have partnered together to host two national conventions each spring and fall to recognize, connect and educate the next generation of journalists. The next convention will be held in San Diego April 10-13, 2014 where more Pacemaker, Individual and Best of Show entrants will be awarded.
