New for 2012: This year NSPA introduced a new contest: Multimedia Story of the Year. Previously, Multimedia Story was a category in the Print Story of the Year contest. The Multimedia Story of the Year contest is co-sponsored by PBS NewsHour Extra and honors student work in three categories: News, Feature and Sports. There were 148 contest entries this year. Entries were judged based on the following criteria:

The print Story of the Year contest is co-sponsored by The Headline Club, the Chicago chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. The contest honors student work in the following categories: News, Feature, Editorial, Sports and Diversity. The categories combined yielded a total of 789 entries.

The first place winners in each category will compete for the $1,000 Brasler Prize, judged by Wayne Brasler of University High School in Chicago.
The Broadcast Story of the Year contest is co-sponsored by SchoolTube.com and the Radio Television Digital News Foundation. The contest honors work in the following categories: News, Sports and Feature, and the contest yielded a total of 89 entries. Entries were judged based on the following criteria:

First through fifth places and honorable mentions will be announced at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention on Nov. 17 in San Antonio.
