First Place
Kylie Vandeven
The View, Park Hill South HS, Riverside, Mo.

Judge’s comments: Just fabulous. The illustration here is brilliant, and well-executed. The black-and-red combination is stunning and powerful. And then the designer did not try to clutter the rest of the page with refers or bold type. The background stays quiet, since the illustration is so loud. Great balance. Great page!

Second Place
Bailey Kopp
The Northwest Passage, Shawnee Mission Northwest HS, Shawnee, Kan.

Judge’s comments: Of all the photo illustration covers, this one was extremely well done. The monster drink on the desk was a subtle touch, but helped deliver the point beautifully. I thought the amount of text on the cover was just right as well; gave me a good read on the story, simply. Outstanding.

Third Place
Cassiel Chadwick, Sabrina Werby
The Urban Legend, The Urban School of San Francisco, San Francisco, Calif.

Judge’s comments: Love, love, love this illustration. Just so well done, and the integration with the headline is superb. This truly stood out from the crowd.

Fourth Place
Jake Knight
The Prospective, Bryant HS, Bryant, Ark.

Judge’s comments: Very nicely executed photo-illustration. Nice concept. I would have liked a little more text on the cover to help explain what the story was about, though — and we didn’t really need to cut off part of the headline for the page number. But overall, a strong page.

Fifth Place
Elana Schrager, Shira Becker, Samantha Wiener, Jonathan Reem
Lion’s Tale, Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, Rockville, Md.

Judge’s comments: Best of the photo entries. Clean images, well edited, and cropped dramatically. Love the minimalist approach to the typography as well on the page — not a lot of papers showed that kind of restraint this year.

Honorable Mention
Conner Gordon
The HiLite, Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.

Judge’s comments: Again, excellent photo use. You really can’t take your eyes off the image. Very bold concept; good execution.
