Storytelling: The Complete Package

Sharpen your storytelling skills, learn from the best, and set yourself apart at the National Scholastic Press Association’s first-ever summer workshop: Storytelling: The Complete Package, July 27-31 at the University of Minnesota’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Minneapolis.

This one-of-a-kind workshop is an exciting opportunity for high school journalists, photographers, designers, and videographers to gain hands-on reporting experience in a bustling metro area with the help of top professionals from the Star Tribune, Pioneer Press, MinnPost and others.

Students will be split into teams of five led by experienced advisers who will guide them through the reporting process. At the weekend’s end, students will come away with a comprehensive, multifaceted story package that will be published by a Twin Cities-based media outlet.

Students will spend the first day of the workshop in classroom sessions on design, photography, alternative copywriting, social media, and more. After Day 1, each group will go out into the city and report on a given topic chosen by local professionals. Students will then spend the rest of the weekend producing professional quality, well-sourced stories complete with visual and graphic elements. View the full schedule here.

At the end of the weekend, NSPA will award certificates of merit for:

  • Visual storytelling (photo, video and design)
  • Narrative/alternative storytelling
  • Editing/Leadership

Applications for this unique summer workshop are now open. The fee is $575, which includes instruction, housing, and access to necessary hardware, software, and other gear. For local commuters, the registration fee is $475.
