2019 magazine Pacemaker finalists announced

ACP honors 41 collegiate magazines as the ‘best of the best’

Sept. 30, 2019

MINNEAPOLIS — Honoring the nation’s best, Associated College Press has named 41 student-produced collegiate magazines as finalists in its annual prestigious Pacemaker competition.

“The Pacemaker is the association’s preeminent award,” Laura Widmer, executive director, said. “ACP is honored to recognize the best of the best.”

The Pacemaker finalists will be recognized and the Pacemaker winners announced at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention, Oct. 31-Nov. 3, 2019, in Washington, D.C.

The 41 magazines represent 22 states and Canada. In all, 126 magazines were entered in the Pacemaker competition, an increase from the 104 entered in 2018.  Magazines competed in feature/general interest and literary arts divisions. There were 89 feature/general interest magazines and 37 literary arts magazines.

Magazines produced at both four-year and two-year institutions competed. There were 103 four-year and 22 two-year entries.

A team of three judges, with extensive magazine-editing experience, studied each entry discussing its strengths and weaknesses.

Gary Lundgren, ACP associate director and coordinator of the Pacemaker competition, said that the quality of the winning collegiate magazines rivals those produced by professionals.

“The verbal and visual storytelling in the winning magazines is incredible and robust long-form stories combine with shorter quick-reads to pace the reader through the pages,” Lundgren said.

“In an era where print publications are on a decline, it is interesting to note the number of magazines competing in the Pacemaker competition is increasing each year, indicating that interest in magazine journalism is strong at the collegiate level,” Lundgren said.

Of the 41 Pacemaker finalists, nine are from two-year schools. ACP will name 14 magazines, approximately 11 percent of the entries, as Pacemaker winners.

Comments from the judges about each of the 14 Pacemaker winners will be posted when they are announced along with professional bios of the judges.
