Executive Director
The Executive Director of Quill and Scroll is a consultative leader and manager who knows and understands journalism, news media, non-profit organizations, professional and/or scholastic educational services and public university culture. The Executive Director will oversee the daily operations of the international honorary society’s programs and its related Foundation, and reports to the organization’s Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will work in an action- and service-oriented environment and will strive to maintain the program as a national leader in scholastic journalism education in an increasingly digital era. This includes supervising professional and student staff, production of media for internal and external audiences, and planning, managing and developing educational and membership services. This position also serves as a liaison with the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication, high school journalism/media educators and students, and other scholastic journalism programs.

Quill and Scroll serves more than 11,000 school chapters and inducts an average of 7,000 student members annually. Organization services include providing resources, scholarships and conducting media evaluations, and yearbook and writing, photo, multimedia and blogging competitions for high school, junior and middle school students. It was organized April 10, 1926, at the University of Iowa by renowned pollster George H. Gallup and a group of high school advisers to encourage and recognize student achievements in journalism and academics. The organization has a Board of Trustees composed of nine high school and collegiate journalism educators, and media-related professionals. The offices are located in the University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s state-of-the- art Adler Journalism Building.
